Why are invasive species important?

Detecting and removing invasive species from our local waters and surrounding habitats is a major part of protecting our native trout and salmon. Some are voracious predators that can eat young and adult fish, whereas others eliminate vital habitat for native species of trees. While many were accidentally introduced, a large number of non-natives have been intentionally released by humans and the impact is undeniable. Our chapter participates in the collection of data as well as the trapping and removal of invasive species such as African clawed frogs, Himalayan blackberry, Eurasian water milfoil, carp, and more. Combined with the efforts of Washington state government, Trout Unlimited staff, and other local groups, we can help limit the impact these species have on our native species and ecosystems.
